New guidebook fatal incidents at sea

Source: Previs/Zeevissersfonds

The social partners and the steering group Previs/Zeevissersfonds (Fund for fishermen) have renewed the first edition of the ‘guidebook for fatal incidents at sea’. These guidelines contain the steps to be taken by all concerned when an incident at sea occurs.  The guidelines can used in case of fatal incidents and serious work injuries, whether or not resulting in physical harm, both for sea fishery and recreational craft.

All fishermen, recreational seafarers and relatives can get a free copy of the guidebook at Previs/Zeevissersfonds, West-Flanders Province, the Social Secretariat for the coast, Mobility and Transport, the chaplain and moral consultant, the Waterway and River Police, the social services of municipalities,…

Previs coordinated the update of the guidelines. Previs aspires to preventing industrial accidents on board of fishing vessels and conducts investigations into every industrial accident on board fishing vessels, together with an external bureau for prevention and protection in the work place. The new guidebook is the result of a good cooperation between all partners concerned. Let’s hope we never have to use it, but should it be necessary, it can prove a useful instrument in supporting the surviving relatives and in guiding the authorities through the required procedures.
